The French prime minister, Cardinal de Fleury, is seated amid textile splendour. To one side is a table with documents and books. The portrait was an official gift and a confirmation of the political alliance with Sweden. Rigaud, whose career – like his subject’s – flowered under Louis XIV, continued to paint in the Baroque manner. There are fourteen versions of this portrait, meaning that many were made with the help of assistants.
