Jean Restout studied under his uncle Jean Jouvenet. He was elected to France’s Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1720. This portrait of his four-year-old son Jean-Bernard is one of the few Restout painted, and has become one of his most popular works. It is admired for the artist’s honest and somewhat unsentimental depiction in which his son seems both happy and pensive.
