Jean-Baptiste Oudry was one of the most favoured artists when paintings were purchased for the newly built Royal Palace of Stockholm. One example is this superb still life by Oudry, purchased in 1747. It had been exhibited at the Paris Salon nine years previously. The silver terrine is the most eye-catching object and represented the latest in the Rococo style. The actual terrine had at that time just been created by Jacques Roettiers, the leading goldsmith of the day, for the Earl of Berkeley.
