Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s painting of a leopard was based on studies at the royal Ménagerie in the gardens of Versailles, which was in disrepair when he viewed the wild animals there. This painting, from 1739, was the last in a series of eleven that Carl Gustaf Tessin bought that year for the interiors of the Royal Palace. The acquisition was severely criticised when the works reached Sweden the following year.
