    This painting was probably inspired by Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s experiences of the royal hunts he was commissioned to document for Louis XV. This and other decorative compositions were made for the open market, however. Oudry kept them in storage for a long time as he was loath to lower his prices. It took Carl Gustaf Tessin four years before a deal was struck in 1739.
