Henri-Pierre Danloux was a successful portrait painter in Paris, but the French Revolution forced him into exile in 1792. That June, he painted Constantia Foster and her nephew. This rapidly executed portrait received great attention and helped establish the artist’s continued career in London. Her simple clothing contrasts with the fashionable Indian shawl and the expensive mahogany furniture with burnt-gilded fittings.
