One of these still lifes was set up indoors, the other outdoors. The “lean” breakfast, made up of oysters, bread, cheese, herring, radishes, plums, figs and a lemon, is contrasted with the “fat” one of ham, wine and fruit. The artist returned several times to such opposing pairs in his still lifes. Acquired by Carl Gustaf Tessin, the paintings were later used by Lovisa Ulrika as panels above two doors facing each other in Drottningholm Palace.
