The Neapolitan painter Aniello Falcone was known as a painter of battle scenes. Unusually for the genre, they don’t refer to particular events but show war as a chaotic affair, with panic and confusion amidst the gun smoke. There are no heroes; several of the anonymous figures turn their backs to the viewer while others flee. The painting is partly in bad condition. A planned technical examination will analyse colour changes, among other things.
