The boy with rosy cheeks and tousled blond locks was perhaps the son of someone in the artist’s circle of friends. The painter has used the portrait study as the head of Amor in the large painting of Triumphant Love. The study was copied several times, both by Willeboirts Bosschaert and by other artists, and the boy appears as angel and cherub in other paintings. This was normal practice in the Antwerp studios during the 17th century.
