Virtually nothing is known about the artist who painted the elderly lady in the red cap and cape with a fur collar. The painter was active from the early 1630s to the end of the 1650s and signed his/her works with a monogram comprising the letters I and S. As in this case, many of the works are tronies, character heads with detailed observations of facial features and garments.
