The scene is a drunken celebration, a bacchanal, on the Greek island of Andros, where Bacchus had created a never-ceasing stream of wine. Rubens’s version is a free copy of a work by the 16th-century painter Titian (Prado, Madrid). His painting differs from Titian’s in its more temperamental expression, and he himself regarded it as an original. It is one of a pair. The other painting, called The Worship of Venus, also belongs to the Nationalmuseum.
