Francesco Albani was one of Annibale Carracci’s pupils. Already around 1600, the Bolognese painters tried to place small biblical or mythological figures in landscapes bearing the characteristics of the surrounds of Rome. The figures were prominent enough for the paintings to achieve greater prestige than just a depiction of nature, but at the same time the landscape became more than just a background.
