The Evangelists are seated together at a table, each engaged in the writing of his Gospel. Matthew’s attribute is an angel, Mark’s a lion. John looks heavenward for inspiration, as his eagle swoops down carrying an inkpot. Except for John, these are rustic elderly men with strongly individualised features. Charged with energy from their animated poses, their hyper-naturalistic presence, coupled with the dramatic illumination, convey a sense of spiritual intensity.
