The year Christina was crowned, David Beck painted this portrait of her in a silk gown. It contains several symbols which praise the queen. Christina’s life-giving spirit pervades the elements – earth (the globe), air (the wind in her veil) and water (the fountain to the left) – and unites her kingdom. Around 1650, monarchy was under threat in several countries, and this portrait can be seen as a philosophical defence of royal power.
