Schröder, who was of German descent, studied under David von Krafft, becoming Sweden’s court portraitist after his death in 1724, and hovintendent (curator of royal collections and buildings) in 1745. His works include portraits of Fredrik I and Ulrika Eleonora and members of their court. He studied in Germany and Italy and was influenced by Baroque masters such as Francesco Trevisani, previously thought to be the author of this work.
