These paintings, once owned by Queen Lovisa Ulrika, are part of a cycle that also includes The Birth of Mary and Mary’s Presentation in the Temple in the Albertini Collection in Rome. They are admired for their chiaroscuro, which call Rembrandt to mind, and for their brisk brushwork. Tiepolo’s inspiration for The Presentation in the Temple was likely a painting by Paolo Veronese in the San Sebastiano church in Venice.
