The girl expresses delight and curiosity. She holds a monocular to her eye and strains to discern something in the distance. Or is it that she is smilingly fascinated by what she sees as well as by the possibilities of seeing it that the instrument provides? The painting was commissioned by the inquiring Queen Lovisa Ulrika, who cultivated her scientific interests by collecting and studying books, coins, medals, art and natural history specimens.
