Like Bernini in his famous sculpture of the same subject, Piazetta has focused on the ecstatic pleasure that the saint described experiencing when an angel pierced her with an arrow. Her eyes are closed, her lips hinting at a smile, and she clasps a rosary used for meditative prayer. Piazetta trained first in his native Venice, then in Bologna where he worked in Giuseppe Maria Crespi’s studio.
