The illustrator Bertil Almqvist painted himself with a knowing frown, pencil in hand. His caricatures included depictions of the conflict between Swedish traditionalists and those who wanted modern design. The conflict flared up at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, and in one of Almqvist’s caricatures the antagonists hit each other with chairs: the traditionalist wields a rococo chair against the functionalist, who retaliates with a tubular steel chair.
