For a time, David Tägtström was one of Sweden’s most sought-after portraitists. He started off as a modernist, but became increasingly conventional in his expression. Although this portrait of the actor Olof Winnerstrand is a work of the mature artist, it contains much of the bolder formal idiom that characterises his earlier painting. Winnerstrand was one of the great actors of his day, working in both theatre and cinema.
