Returning from his Italian tour in the summer of 1784, Gustav III received this full-length portrait of his son as a gift from Queen Sofia Magdalena. The crown prince is sitting on a life-like rocking horse, covered in shining sealskin and with a saddle and bridle of leather. The page pulling him round what are now the Vita Havet assembly rooms is Georg Jonas von Wright. Breda’s sizeable fee caused a conflict with the queen, who queried the price.
