This portrait by Lorens Pasch the Younger depicts Lovisa Ulrika with an open book in her hand, painting her as a femme savante, a learned and well-lettered woman. Prussia was not only a military power, and cultural interests were also cultivated at court. As Sweden’s queen, Lovisa Ulrika maintained high ambitions for culture and learning. Nationalmuseum’s collections include numerous works that hung in the royal palaces during her time as queen.
