This portrait was painted by Antoine Pesne in Berlin the year Adolf Frederick was elected as successor to the Swedish throne. He wears a cuirass, to which the Order of the Seraphim – founded five years later – has been added secondarily. The frame is surmounted by a helmet and a royal crown. Other decoration includes dragons and symbols of strength (Hercules’ club) and justice (Lady Justice’s scales). At the bottom shines the North Star, emanating from which is a cornucopia, symbolising the prosperity of the kingdom.
