The Polish king John II Casimir was the last ruler of the House of Vasa. Here he wears a Polish costume with a red ankle-length robe, characteristic sash belt, fur-lined cloak and plumed black hat, mainly found in portraits painted after his coronation in 1649 and over the next two years. Otherwise, John Casimir is portrayed in the European fashions of the day. The artist Daniel Schultz worked for the Polish court from 1649 to 1660. According to an engraving, he was the inventor of this portrait type.
