At the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg in 1955, Gustavsberg launched Terma and Spisa ribb. The ideal of buying a service for 12 people lived on but was increasingly perceived as oldfashioned. Traditionally, glasses and ceramic tableware were sold in sets of 12. That was a major investment and required a home with spacious cupboards. Now, parts of services were sold individually, and customers were encouraged to mix and match to create table settings with a personal touch. One advantage of Spisa ribb was that certain parts were ovenproof. The dishes can be used for oven cooking and serving. The brown-glazed service Terma was also flameproof. Made in a ceramic material called Novarlit, developed with the AGA company and patented by Gustavsberg, Terma withstands the temperature difference between a hot stove and cold water. This meant you could minimise crockery, and as the two services could be effectively combined, they gave the dinner table an informal look.
