Anne Catherine was married to Christian IV of Denmark. On the left side of her bodice, nearest her heart, she wears a jewel with a crowned number 3. Neither her husband nor her father had this ordinal, and three is instead assumed to stand for C, the first letter of the king’s name. The dog at the queen’s feet wears a collar with her initials. Several similar portraits can be found in Swedish and Danish collections.
