The inscription, which describes this as a portrait of Christian V of Denmark, is in fact jumping the gun. The “prince-elect” passed away a year before his father, Christian IV, and thus never became king. He suffered from poor health and died in connection with a visit to a spa. The prince’s doublet and breeches are trimmed with horizontal gold braid, accentuating his physical build. The portrait may have been painted around 1634, the year he married a Saxon princess.
