A magic calm shrouds Constantin Hansen’s view from Piazza San Pietro in Vincoli, thanks to the predominance in the foreground of a peaceful and deserted area. This place and how it was experienced seem to be what Hansen wanted to render. From the foreground we are led through a walled garden on the left and the church on the right along a steep street to end up with a view over the roofs of a bluish, hazy Rome.
