In 1735–36, Carl Gustaf Tessin served as Sweden’s minister in Vienna. His mission included conveying his country’s official congratulations on the marriage of Archduchess Maria Theresa to Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine in February 1736. In Johan Lundberg’s painting, commissioned by Tessin, the latter’s head can be made out in the background, to the left of a woman with her back to the viewer.
