Desmarées has depicted Nicodemus Tessin the Younger in the role of royal adviser. The character of this portrait parallels Baroque art, with heavy drapes and palatial architecture in the background. Tessin was at the height of his career when this lionising portrait was painted in 1723, but just three years later he was in political disfavour. Despite this, Tessin was able to restart the construction of Stockholm Palace in 1727.
