Sofia Albertina was Gustav III’s unmarried younger sister. On account of her kinship with the Prussian royal family, she was appointed abbess of the convent of Quedlinburg, a position that also involved governing the town by the same name. The princess is portrayed here standing outdoors, with trees and sky in the background. The artist has attempted to produce an oil painting resembling a pastel. The effect is now distorted, though, by significant fading of some of the pigments, especially the reds.
