The Dutch artist Abraham Wuchters was a court painter in Denmark, but for a time after Charles X Gustav’s death in 1660 he was lent out to the Swedish court. This was when these small por- traits on copper of the late king, his son and his widow were painted. The 5-year-old Charles XI is depicted among arms and Swedish flags, dressed in the child’s frock of purple- and gold- coloured brocade that he wore at the opening of the Diet in Gothenburg in 1660 and which is preserved in the Royal Armoury.
