This serious young woman, portrayed full-length, is one of the mysteries among the older portraits. Earlier identifications of her as Gustav Vasa’s first consort, Katarina, or daughter, Sofia, are not convincing. She is dressed in the Spanish Habsburg court fashion of around 1580, in a stiff, bell-shaped dress with embroidered bodice and yellow-and-white sleeves, but, unusually, without the sleeveless overdress that is part of the costume. Her headdress forms a crown of pearls.
