The little boy in Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller’s portrait was the son of Henriette Genet-Campan, lady-in-waiting to Marie-Antoinette. He is with the dog Aline by the cave in the English park at the family’s summer house in Croissy near Paris. The painting was shown at the 1787 Salon, but with the anonymous title Child playing with a dog. The artist painted two-year-old Henri to thank Madame Campan for her help with the great portrait of the Queen.
