In 1711 the deposed Polish king Stanisław Leszczyński arrived with his family in Kristianstad. The following year, Hedvig Eleonora commissioned Johan Starbus to paint their portraits. Two signed paintings each of the king’s mother, the queen and the two princesses are included in the portrait collection. The younger daughter, Maria, is dressed here in an ermine-lined cloak as a sign of her royal rank. In 1725 she became queen of France through her marriage to Louis XV.
