Sergel’s friend Jean Baptiste Stouf exhibited this terracotta at the Paris Salon in 1795. It depicts a woman dressed à l’antique resting on the altar of friendship and love guarded by a dog, symbolising fidelity. Her right hand is placed against her heart while at the same time a dove, the symbol of love, alights on her shoulder and crowns her with a garland of flowers from a pomegranate tree. Her slightly theatrical pose adds to the generic feeling.
