Frederick Cruickshank studied under Andrew Robertson, and the resulting works are often misleading, since the student’s works are remarkably similar to those of
his teacher. The flowing, almost sketch-like style of painting watercolour
eventually became even more typical of Cruickshank, as
intimated by this portrait of an unknown gentleman.
