With great attention to detail, Margareta de Heer has depicted two butterflies, a hawk moth and two beetles. All are species native to the Netherlands, where de Heer lived. She is primarily known for still lifes with plants and animals, but she also painted genre scenes. Margareta de Heer was lucky enough to be the daughter of an artist and could learn from home. During the 1600s, the opportunities for a woman to be educated were very limited.
