Bird cages are common in 18th century portraits, often in pictures of young girls where they are seen as a symbol of innocence. In Taraval’s painting, it also shows a rural context. But given the girl’s elegant, yet careless, outfit, it is a kind of romantic representation rather than a realistic picture.
