BiographyJan Cossiers was a pupil of his father Antoon
Cossiers and later of Cornelis de Vos. He spent some
time in Aix-en-Provence in 1623–1624 on his way to
Italy. He is documented in Rome in 1624. In 1626,
after his return to Antwerp, he visited the celebrated
humanist Peiresc in Aix-en-Provence, who recommended
him to Rubens. In 1628–1629 he became a
master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. In his early
works Cossiers was much influenced by the Caravaggisti
and painted genre scenes with concert parties,
lute-players and fortune tellers. Later he was caught up
in the Flemish Baroque movement and became a
member of the group of painters working with Rubens
on the decorations for the Triumphal Entry of the
Cardinal Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635 and
in 1637–1638 for the Torre de la Parada, the hunting
lodge of King Filip VI outside Madrid. Cossier is also
known as a portraitist and draughtsman.
