BiographyCesare da Sesto was born in Sesto Calende
outside Milan. He was a follower of Leonardo da
Vinci and counts as one of the more important
Leonardeschi. He also collaborated with Baldassare
Peruzzi and carried out work in Milan,
Rome, Naples and Messina. He began his career
as a close follower of Leonardo, painting several
copies of his master’s works, but in time he was
also inspired by the classicism of Raphael and established
a style combining the two, exemplified
in paintings such as the San Rocco Altarpiece in
Castello Sforzesco and the Salome in the Kunsthistorisches
Museum in Vienna.
