BiographyPieter Thys, a portrait and history painter became
a pupil of Artus Deurweerders in 1635. Around 1639
he went to England where he studied for Anthony
van Dyck. In 1664/1665 he became a master in the
Antwerp Guild of St. Luke and in 1660/1661 the
dean of the Guild. In 1648 he married Constantia van
den Beken with whom he had a son, Pieter Pauwel,
who also became a painter. He sometimes also painted
tapestry cartoons after sketches by Jan van den
Hoecke. Although influenced by Van den Hoecke,
Thys was principally a follower of Anthony van Dyck.
