BiographyMattheus van Helmont was born in Antwerp in
1623 and became a member of the city’s Guild of St.
Luke in 1645/46. After leaving Antwerp he settled
down in Brussels, where in 1647 he belonged to the
local guild of painters. He collaborated with Jacquesd’Arthois
in whose landscapes he painted the figures.
The influence of David Ryckaert III and David Teniers
II on the motifs of his genre paintings can be noticed
but in the later works inspiration also came from Dutch
genre paintings. His figures are often characterised by
their incorrect proportions and the backgrounds are
usually dark with simplified perspectives. His works are
often confused with those of Gilis van Tilborgh.
