BiographyBenvenuto Tisi, called il Garofalo, first trained in
Ferrara under the direction of Domenico Panetti.
From 1497 he began a second apprenticeship in
the studio of Boccaccio Boccaccino in Cremona.
During his formative years he was influenced by
Lorenzo Costa, and among the works from his
first period are the frescoes in the Palazzo Costabili
in Ferrara and the Holy Family in the Galleria
Doria Pamphilj in Rome. A possible study trip to
Venice may have introduced Garofalo to Giorgione’s
work, and around 1513 he went to Rome,
where he immersed himself in the art of Michelangelo
and, above all, Raphael. His Raphaelesque
classicism, combined with the intense colours of
Dosso Dossi and Titian, is evident in the Massacre
of the Innocents (1519) and the Madonna Resting
(1525), both in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara.
To avoid confusion with the painter Giovanni
Battista Benvenuti, called l’Ortolano, Garofalo
signed his paintings with a carnation.
