BiographyAlessio De Marchis was a painter and draughtsman
born in Naples. Little is known about his
first period before he moved to Rome, though his
early manner shows a close affinity to Salvator
Rosa. According to the biographer Nicola Pio,
De Marchis was based in Rome from 1701. Here
he spent a year in the workshop of the German
painter Philip Peter Roos, called Rosa da Tivoli,
where he trained as a landscape painter. The
Landscape with Buttero (Galleria Nazionale d’Arte
Antica, Rome) is still reminiscent of the work
of his master, but also shows influences from

based in Italy, such as van der Cabel. De Marchis
was involved in the important commission for
genre and landscape paintings for the Palazzo
Ruspoli (now lost). For unclear reasons, he spent
a long time in prison, but was freed in 1728 on
the intercession of Cardinal Annibale Albani.
The cardinal took him to Urbino, where he was
commissioned to decorate the Albani family
palace. From Urbino De Marchis finally moved
to Perugia.
