BiographyAnimal- and still life painter. First recorded
as a pupil of Pieter Boel at Antwerp in 1659. A master
in the local guild of St. Luke in 1663, David de Coninck
later left Antwerp and is reported to have worked
in Paris, supposedly in the studio of Nicasius
Bernaerts, until 1669. Recorded in Rome from 1671
to 1694, where he was a member of the Accademia di
San Lucca and joined the Netherlandish artists’ association,
the “Bentveughels”. On his way back north
he spent some time in Vienna. By 1699 he was living
in Brussels, where he was last recorded in 1701 on
entering the local painters’ guild.
De Coninck specialized in paintings of live animals
and poultry in landscape and garden settings, hunting
scenes and game still lifes with gun dogs in a landscape.
He also painted several fruit pieces. A prolific
painter, De Coninck rarely signed his works, all of
which are painted on canvas, and never dated them.
Throughout his career he remained a close follower
of his teacher, Pieter Boel, and, especially, of the animal
and still life painter Jan Fyt, whose work he emulated
in composition, style and colour. Many as yet
unidentified paintings by De Coninck are probably
still to be sought among those attributed to these
masters. De Coninck influenced a number of Italian
painters, including the animal and still life painter
Baldassare de Caro.
