Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen was baptized in
London in 1593. His family were originally
from Cologne, but moved via Antwerp to London.
As a young man, from 1618 to 1643, Van
Ceulen was active in England as a portraitist.
There he received numerous commissions
from the English aristocracy and, alongside
Lely and Kneller, became the most popular
portrait painter of the Stuart era. In 1643 his
name appears in the records of the painters’
guild in Middelburg; somewhat later, in 1646,
in corresponding documents in Amsterdam;
and the following year in The Hague. He was
probably a pupil of Marcus Geeraert for a time,
and produced numerous portraits, including
miniatures, with a pronounced realism in their
rendering of clothing, facial features, skin and
other elements. In his later works we usually
find a greenish blue background, with a few
grey tinges and brown shadows.
