BiographyCarlo Cignani bolo gna 1628–1719 forl. Carlo Cignani was born in Bologna in 1628. He was initially apprenticed to the lesser-known Bolognese artist Giovanni Battista del Cairo; thereafter he entered the studio of Francesco Albani (1578–1660). Apart from trips to Livorno around 1656, to Rome in 1662–65 and to Parma in 1678–81, he worked mainly in Bologna until 1686. He then transferred his studio to Forl. to paint the dome of the cathedral, a commission which he did not complete until 1706. One of the most admired Italian painters of his generation, in 1709 Cignani was appointed principe of the newly founded Accademia Clementina in Bologna. He ran a large studio and among his foremost students were Marcantonio Franceschini (1648–1729) and Luigi Quaini (1611–1680). Cignani worked squarely in the Bolognese classicist tradition of his master Albani and the Carracci, and must be considered one of their most conservative heirs
