BiographyElisabetta Sirani was the daughter of the painter
Giovanni Andrea Sirani, Guido Reni’s principal
assistant. She received her first training from
her father, and at a young age she took over
and ran the family workshop. She was a prolific
painter, famous for her rapid painting technique.
Sirani specialized in small paintings for private
use, commissioned by wealthy noble and royal
patrons, including Grand Duke Cosimo III de’
Medici. Her canvases of mythological subjects
and images of the Holy Family and the Virgin
and Child, and above all her portraits of female
saints and heroines, gained her international
fame.
