Martinus Rørbye is not primarily known as a portraitist. This realistic and penetrating image of the artist’s 75-year-old mother is private in character. Rørbye painted Frederikke Eleonora Cathrine on several occasions, but this portrait was done in 1848, the year he died. His mother survived him by three years.
